Position Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance and promote a safe, sustainable workplace at our chemical manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while fostering a strong safety culture across the plant. The EHS Manager provides leadership and direction to the EHS Specialist while maintaining overall accountability for site environmental, health, safety, industrial hygiene, training, and emergency response programs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local environmental authorities, and all applicable regulations.
- Maintain permits, licenses, and required documentation for chemical handling, storage, emissions, and waste disposal.
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports (e.g., air emissions, hazardous waste, TRI reporting).
- Act as liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
2. Safety Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain site safety programs and procedures.
- Lead Process Safety Management (PSM) programs where applicable.
- Conduct and/or participate in risk assessments and hazard analyses (HAZOP, JSA), and safety audits.
- Oversee incident investigation processes and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
- Track and report safety KPIs (TRIR, LTIR, near-miss reporting).
3. Environmental Management
- Monitor air emissions, wastewater discharge, hazardous waste handling, and chemical storage.
- Implement pollution prevention and sustainability initiatives.
- Manage environmental monitoring programs and ensure compliance with permit conditions.
- Oversee Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) programs.
- Oversee the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP).
4. Leadership & Management
- Supervise and guide EH&S staff, including the EH&S Specialist.
- Provide input in the development of budgets and manage departmental expenditures.
- Provide EH&S guidance to plant leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Analyze EH&S performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
5. Health Programs, Training, and Emergency Preparedness (with support of EH&S Specialist)
- Provide leadership and oversight of industrial hygiene programs.
- Coordinate and manage medical surveillance programs.
- Oversee occupational health initiatives.
- Develop, implement, and maintain emergency response plans.
- Coordinate emergency drills (fire, chemical spill, evacuation).
- Serve as incident commander during emergencies.
- Develop and deliver EH&S training programs for employees and contractors.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement mindset.
- Lead safety committees and facilitate toolbox meetings.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Experience
- 5–10+ years of EH&S experience in chemical manufacturing or heavy industry.
- Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM).
